The Divine Ratio

IS THE “DIVINE RATIO” WHAT MAKES A PLEASING APPEARANCE?

Ever wonder why beautiful things look so well proportioned? It’s no accident. Architecture, works of art, and even the human body, especially the face, has certain dynamic “Ratios” that are universally more pleasing to the eye. No matter male or female, or race, these Ratios are present.

INTRODUCING THE OLDEST MATH IN THE WORLD, THE PHI

It’s long been said that beautiful art is mathematics at work. Mathematics and beauty (as with music) go together. Attractive or pleasing faces come close to a certain mathematical ratio, termed by several names: the Divine Ratio; the Golden Ratio; the Golden Number; and Phi, named for the Greek sculptor Phidias.  There is a number defining this ratio: 1 to 1.618.

This ratio is seen everywhere. The tail of a seahorse. The spiral of a snail. Every blooming  flower. And even the spiraling wind-blown clouds of a hurricane visualized from the planes flying above. Phi is present in all works of beauty. Because it’s presence everywhere, it’s considered the “Divine Ratio”. Many feel only God could have produced this amazingly congruent yet beautiful ratio of design. That’s why we see this ratio duplicated over and over in art and great buildings. Structures such as the great pyramids base their entire design on the mathematical ratio of Phi. Great plastic surgeons use this formula to help their patients improvement facial proportions (or ratios).  The secret to a beautiful face lies in the proportions. And it has nothing to do with origins; these proportions are there in every race.

IS THIS PHI RATIO JUST FOR THE FACE?

It’s in every part of our body. Here’s two great examples:
Hold out your arm. Measure from the crease inside your elbow to the lower wrist crease exactly where the hand starts. Now measure from that point to the end of the longest finger. That ratio is 1.618, or Phi. No look at your hands. From your wrist to your first joint to the last joint, from the first joint to second joint to the last joint, all of these numbers are in play. You are truly a divine creation! I could go on forever, but at the end of this article is a link to a website that visually explains how the Phi proportions work together in your facial structure.

DOES MOST EVERYONE HAVE THIS DIVINE RATIO?

Simply walking through an airport and observing some of the passing faces will tell you that not everyone has the perfect ratio. It is amazing to think that every average person has two eyes, two ears, a nose, and a mouth, yet we all look so vastly different. Some of this has to do with the “ideal Ratio”.

SO…. WHAT IF MY PROPORTIONS AREN’T SO “DIVINE”?

Don’t worry, most are close, but need a slight tweaking. “Slight” means that we have a variety of methods today to bring those ratios closer to Divine without much effort or discomfort. With the utilization of Perlane®, Restylane®, and Dysport®, the slight disproportions, or those proportions that have changed with time, can be either created or restored. Often this involves the lateral cheeks (not directly in front), the jowl, chin, or temples. Perlane® restores the youthful projections that were experienced, or in some cases missed, to the youthful presentation of years ago. When it comes to lips, Restylane, the only product on the market approved for lips at this time, can restore the 1 to 1.618, or more simply, the 40 to 60 ratio (40% top, 60% bottom) that has been proved in study after study (by regular folks like us) that it is more aesthetically pleasing. All of this takes place in a short visit, without surgery!

BUT I WANT TO LOOK LIKE ME!

The beauty of these small enhancements is that you really look like you, but when you get back closer to the Divine Ratio, you simply look like a little “better” you.  The changes are subtle, and people think you are simply “fresh” or “rested”. There is no evidence that you had “anything done” but you truly look great.

CAN I REALLY ACHIEVE THIS RATIO?

There are several products available to help achieve this ratio and simply make you look more refreshed. Restylane and Perlane are hyaluronic acids (a product you have in your body in abundance naturally) can be administered in the appropriate areas and amounts to naturally augment what you already have. In addition, excessive muscle movement can distort the normally smooth dimensions that are present in youth and are more distorted later in life due to the constant, yet unnecessary movements that are created out of habit. Dysport, a neuromodulator can “relax” these overactive muscles to help recreate that youthful softness you once had.

CAN’T ANYONE TREAT ME AND CREATE THESE SAME RESULTS?

While the “Phi” ratio has made a reappearance recently, there aren’t many providers who have either heard of it, or much less understand it. It does take a bit of learning to understand, but once you do, it is apparent in almost everything you look at. The world is truly a beautiful place. The measurements are everywhere! Make sure you go to someone who can do the math!
